Quote that inspired this piece:
"Her life was not asking her to begin again. It was asking her to begin at last.”
— Unknown
My poem for this painting:
For a long time, she gave herself away in small pieces —
to the marriage, to the children, to the work,
to whoever needed her most.
Until she had almost forgotten
the woman she was.
But something within her had not forgotten.
It had kept watch, faithfully waiting.
Gently whispering to her:
Remember the way you love beauty.
The tender things that move you.
Remember the essence of what makes you 'you'.
Like the soft breath of a fan on a warm afternoon,
like the sweetness of a rosebud unfurling —
the parts of herself that had long ago been put on hold
began to open; her tenderness, her possibility, her becoming.
And what had seemed finished was not finished at all.
She realised: it was only just the beginning.
Symbolism:
ROSEBUDS: — the parts of herself still opening; tenderness, possibility, becoming.
BLUE FORGET-ME-NOTS: — not losing herself again; remembering who she is beneath years of compromise, duty, or being needed by others.
ORANGE BLOSSOM: — renewal, hope, a fresh beginning; traditionally associated with love and marriage, but reinterpreted here as a commitment to her own life.
KEY: Remembrance, return, and self-reclamation.
Unlocking the parts of herself she had quietly put away.
Remembering the woman she was before duty, compromise and being needed.
The gentle return to her own life, beauty and becoming.
In Evangeline’s Story:
‘A Tender Return’ appears in Instalment 20 of The Turning Point.
More than fifty years after receiving the exquisite custom madeTiffany fan from the man she loved, celebrated prima ballerina, Margaux Vasiliev opens its silk-lined box once more. The lingering scent held within it brings an old love vividly back to life — and begins to uncover the story she has carried quietly for decades.
